Register a Domain

Take the name while it's still yours to take.

Domains go on a first-come basis and there is no waiting list. If the name of your business is still free, registering it costs less than lunch and settles the question permanently. We check it, register it in your name and set it up — usually the same day you ask.

How It Works

From idea to live address.

Four steps, and only one of them is yours.

01. Tell Us The Name

Send the name you have in mind. If you're not settled on one, describe the business and we'll come back with options that are actually free.

02. We Check And Quote

We check it across the extensions worth holding and confirm the yearly price in writing. Nothing is paid for until you say go.

03. Registered To You

Registered with you as the legal registrant, paid up for the first year, with the ownership record sent to you once it clears.

04. Pointed Where It Belongs

We set the DNS, issue the certificate and configure mail — so the name resolves to your site and your address works the same day.

What We Need From You

Less than you're expecting.

Registration stalls on paperwork people assume is coming. This is the whole of it.

A Name, Or Three

The one you want, plus a second and third choice. Good names go early, and having alternatives ready saves a day of back and forth.

Your Registrant Details

Registered name, address, phone and email for whoever legally owns it — usually the company. This is the ownership record, so it needs to be accurate.

A Working Email Address

Somewhere the registry's verification message can land. It has to be confirmed within a few days or the domain gets suspended, so use one you actually read.

A Yes

We quote the yearly price before anything is bought. Say go and it's registered; say no and you've spent nothing but the question.

Naming

Choosing a name you won't regret.

You will read this name down a phone line, put it on a vehicle and type it a thousand times. A few minutes here is worth more than any of the extensions you might buy.

Worth doing before you buy

  • Say it out loud to somebody and have them spell it back. If they get it wrong, the name is wrong.
  • Shorter beats clever. Every extra word is another chance to mistype it.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers — nobody says "dash" out loud, and "4" or "four" doubles the guesses.
  • Skip anything tied to one product or one town unless you're certain you'll never outgrow it.
  • Search the name at CIPC and as a trademark first. A domain won't protect you from somebody who owns the name.
  • If an obvious misspelling exists, take that too and redirect it. It's a year's registration against a lifetime of lost visitors.

Questions

Before you register.

Prices for every extension are on the pricing page. Already own a name elsewhere? That's a transfer, not a registration.

How quickly is it live?

A .co.za is usually active within the hour, and .com, .net and .org are close to immediate. Allow up to a working day for the change to be visible everywhere, because networks around the world cache the answer for a while.

Should I register more than one extension?

If the .com of your name is free and you're a South African business trading locally, take both it and the .co.za. Point one at the other and use the one you want people to type. It's a small yearly cost against a competitor buying the other half of your name later.

Can I register a name for a business I haven't started yet?

Yes. Register it in your own name now and we'll move it to the company once it's registered. Holding the name early costs a year's fee; discovering it's gone the week you launch costs a rebrand.

What do I actually need to sign?

Nothing. You confirm the details by email, we invoice for the year, and the registration goes through. There's no contract and no lock-in — the domain is yours and you can move it elsewhere whenever you like.

Do I need hosting at the same time?

No. A domain with nowhere to point still parks perfectly happily, and we'll put a holding page on it for free. Add hosting when the site is ready, on its own invoice.
